All good gifts.
In honor of Thanksgiving being a matter of weeks away, I decided I would start practicing gratefulness early. Not that gratefulness should have its own season; it should be practiced year-round. But sometimes we lose sight of the “little” things in life. Times are tough right now for a lot of people, myself and my family included. It’s essential that we not lose heart during these tribulations, but focus on our gifts and blessings. For, that’s really what they are: blessings. “Every good and perfect gift is from above…” (James 1:17, NIV). This season, I’m choosing hope and gratitude. I challenge you to do the same.
Without further adieu, and with great thanksgiving,
50 Things I am Thankful for:
1) My family. My parents, for doing such a superb job of raising (and home schooling) five kids; for supporting all of us spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Thank you, Mama, for the examples of servant hood. Daddy, thank you for teaching me where true wealth lies. Andrew, thank you for talking me through countless parking job and lost-key situations, and still choosing to answer the phone next time I call. Matthew, thank you for listening to everything I have to say, and for understanding me when others don’t. David, thank you for reminding me that “Jesus is in [my] heart,” and there’s no need to be afraid. Samuel, thank you for making me smile; and for the popcorn-eating, National Anthem-singing, “Dimples” moments when you let me on the other side of your World War II defense blockade; the moments, however brief, when you realize I’m not the enemy (even though I am a girl). A special thanks to my extended family for supporting me, loving me, and encouraging me all my life.
2) My loved ones that I am not technically biologically linked to, but to whom I feel related anyway. My second family. You mean the world to me. (Sarah-speak for a very special, “I love you.”)
3) My home.
4) Soft rays of sunshine.
5) Double rainbows.
6) Fields of corn and wheat.
7) Sunflowers that stretch toward the sky.
8) Clouds, clouds, clouds.
9) Classic MGM musicals.
10) Any musicals. (Minus the profane/mediocre.)
11) People who stumble time after time, and still get back up.
12) Smiles that are so big you can hear them.
13) Laughter. The best medicine.
14) Theatre. Really, truly. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be involved with theatre. It brings me joy.
15) Redemption.
16) Heaven.
17) Photography. Vision.
18) Life.
19) Glimpses of Jesus.
20) God’s unfailing love, mercy, and grace.
21) Music. Don’t even get me started.
22) Breathing.
23) Sand between my toes.
24) Freedom.
25) Hugs.
26) Making new friends.
27) Keeping old friends.
28) A new jar of peanut butter. I love that “dipping a knife into a new jar of peanut butter” feeling.
29) Miracles.
30) Swing sets. Daisies. Yo-yos. Pinwheels. Slinkies.
31) The simple joys of childhood.
32) White chocolate macadamia nut cookies. They are my favorite.
33) Filled journals.
34) Eternity.
35) Bright scarves, hats, and coats in the wintertime.
36) The change in seasons. Especially leaves changing colors.
37) Walking barefoot.
38) Love.
39) Christmas. Everything about Christmas. The joy-filled wonderment that comes along with Christmastime is one of my favorite things.
40) Companionable silence.
41) A clean slate.
42) Second chances.
43) Newly-fallen snow.
44) Being able to see your breath in cold, winter air.
45) A gentle breeze.
46) Blue skies, smiling at me.
47) Words.
48) Family road trips.
49) Sunsets and sunrises.
50) Jesus Christ. For every good gift. For his sacrifice. For Him.
Sarah.
